We are going to talk of books about Venice. There is no particular genre we are focusing on, only the subject has to be, on the broad sense, Venice. The author Iosif Aleksandrovich Brodsky was born in a jewish family in Leningrad now Saint Petersburg in , son of a photographer and of an interpreter. Because of the jewishness, his family was marginalized and lived in poverty.

Grown up, Iosif was a complicated child: he left school only 15 years old, and he began doing several works. In this way Brodsky started his poetical career: his early poems were published clandestinely. He was encouraged to pursue his career by russian intellectual Anna Akhmatova, who introduced Iosif to Marina Basmanova.

The subsequent trial inflicted him the punishment of five years of hard labour in a village in Norenskaya, in the Archangelsk region, miles from Leningrad.

He had his own small cottage — a luxury even if there was no electric lights or plumbing or heating. In the protests brought to a revision of verdict, and Brodsky came back to Leningrad.

Even if at that time he was officially one of the most famous Russian poet in the world, his status did not preserved him to another prosecution: he was denied permission to travel, his poems could be published only illegally in the URSS and finally, in , he was accused of mental illness, without any medical visit. After the consecration of his success, he won the Nobel Prize for literature in In this period Brodksy started to frequently visit Venice, at least once a year: for this attachment to the city in Venezia Nuova, a consortium of contractors, asked Brodsky to write about Venice.

He was buried in the monumental cemetery of Venice, on San Michele island, as last homage to the city really loved by the Poet. The book The book is a love declaration to Venice. It is composed by short paragraphs, like several paintings that composed a gallery. Fondamenta is, in Venetian, the name of the street that run along a canal.
